Our Methodology

Research Standards

At FactFinder, we follow a rigorous methodology to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our fact checks. Our process is designed to be transparent, thorough, and fair to all perspectives.

We believe that factual information should be accessible to everyone, and we strive to present our findings in a clear, concise manner that respects our readers' intelligence while providing the context necessary to understand complex topics.

1. Claim Selection

We select claims based on their cultural significance, prevalence, and potential impact on public understanding. Claims may come from user submissions, trending topics, or our own research interests.

Our selection criteria include:

  • Cultural or historical significance
  • Widespread belief or circulation
  • Potential educational value
  • Availability of reliable sources for verification
  • Relevance to our areas of expertise

2. Research Process

Our research involves consulting primary sources whenever possible, including historical documents, academic publications, interviews, and authenticated artifacts. We prioritize peer-reviewed research and expert opinions from relevant fields.

For each fact check, we:

  • Identify and consult primary sources
  • Review academic literature on the subject
  • Consult with subject matter experts when necessary
  • Examine both supporting and contradicting evidence
  • Consider historical and cultural context
  • Document all sources for transparency

3. Evaluation Criteria

We evaluate claims based on the quality and quantity of evidence, the reliability of sources, and the consensus among experts in the field. We consider both supporting and contradicting evidence to provide a balanced assessment.

Our evaluation considers:

  • Strength and consistency of evidence
  • Reliability and credibility of sources
  • Expert consensus in the relevant field
  • Historical context and contemporary understanding
  • Logical consistency and plausibility

4. Rating System

We use a three-tier rating system:

True

Claims supported by strong evidence from reliable sources. The claim is accurate and represents the best current understanding of the topic.

Mixture

Claims that contain elements of truth but may be misleading, incomplete, or lacking definitive evidence. These claims require nuance and context to understand properly.

False

Claims contradicted by strong evidence from reliable sources. The claim is inaccurate or fundamentally misrepresents the facts.

5. Review Process

Each fact check undergoes internal review by at least two team members before publication. We update our fact checks when new evidence emerges or when errors are identified.

Our review process includes:

  • Peer review by at least one other researcher
  • Editorial review for clarity and accuracy
  • Fact-checking of all sources and citations
  • Regular updates when new information becomes available
  • Correction policy for addressing errors
